Albert Edward Fitzgerald, Jr.
The text, photos, and newspaper clippings below were provided to the Society by Albert Fitzgerald's son, Albert Fitzgerald.
Albert Edward Fitzgerald, Jr. was in Company H, 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment and he joined in 1939. He served with the 27th on Guadalcanal, where he became very ill with malaria.
This scan also includes some pictures of him and a newspaper article about how young he was when he joined.
Our father was commissioned at the end of WW II served in Korea with the 1st Infantry Division, and then became a dual rated Army Aviator. He died at age 38 from radiation poisoning after he and his fellow aviators from Ft. Benning participated in the Nevada above ground nuclear weapons tests series called Operation Plumbob.
He was able to relate to me many stories about serving in the 27th when we were stationed at Ft. Benning in 1957, and I was old enough to grasp what he was saying.
