27th Infantry Scholarship Application

Scholarship Award Criteria

The 27th Infantry Regiment Historical Society has established the following criteria for administering and awarding
educational scholarships:

  • All applications must be complete and factual.
  • Scholarships will be awarded in $1 ,027.00 amounts.
  • The number of Scholarships will be determined by the Committee.
  • A child, grandchild or spouse of an active or deceased member of the Society for at least 12 months prior to the application date.

The following requirements must be adhered to:

  • The Committee will not be able to consider and application that is incomplete.
  • Any applications filed after the deadline will be returned to the applicant.
  • The awards are considered only for those applicants who will be attending a 2-year 4-year college, university, junior college or trade school.
  • The applicant must be intent on pursuing a course toward a degree or certificate of completion and must include at least 12 semester hours per semester toward that goal.
  • The application and supporting documents must be submitted to the Scholarship Chairperson by the deadline date.

The completed application must include in addition to the application form the following forms:

  • A personal letter from the applicant giving the reasons for the request, plans for the future, summary of school activities and interests and other points of interest the applicant thinks pertinent.
  • A transcript of high school credits through the first semester of the senior year to include rank in class and most recent ACT or SAT college entrance test scores
  • If the applicant is in the second or later year of an undergraduate program, the transcripts of post-high school must be submitted.
  • Letters of recommendation by 3 recognizable community citizens, one to be from the high school principal of the graduating school, the authority who certifies high school equivalency or the equivalent.
  • A letter of acceptance from the institution selected by the applicant or a list of applications pending. The award will not be made until the acceptance is giver A full-face head and shoulders color photograph of the applicant, not larger than 3 x 4.

2025/2026 Recipients

Noelle Grace Hutchings, 2025 graduate of Plymouth High School in Plymouth, Indiana, has
received a 2025/2026 27th Infantry Wolfhound Scholarship. Noelle is the granddaughter of
Max R. Grow, US Army - retired. She is pursuing a college degree in Graphic Design from
Indiana University of Kokomo this Fall. Her aspiration is to one day become an entrepreneur
and own a print shop.

Gage William Heyne, recipient of a 2025/2026 27th Wolfhound Scholarship, is a 2025 graduate
of English Valley Community High School in North English, IA. Gage is the grandson of Ruth
Henson and the late Wolfhound Richard W. Henson and will be attending Wartburg college in
Waverly, IA this Fall majoring in Exercise Science while running with the Wartburg Knights
Cross Country and Track teams. Gage is graduating top of his class, earned the Governor’s
Scholar Recognition and will represent his class in KWWL’s Best of Class. He has earned
spots in various state competitions over his high school career including cross country, track
and golf, breaking multiple school records in track events including the 3200m, 1600m, 800m,
distance and sprint medleys.

Charlie Pryor, winner of a 2025/26 27th Infantry Wolfhound Scholarship, is a 2025 graduate of
Woodbine High School, Woodbine, IA. Charlie is the granddaughter of Bernard and Joanne
Lapke and plans to attend the University of Sioux Falls this Fall to major in Exercise Science
with minors in Business and Psychology. During her high school career, Charlie was involved
in various activities including basketball, softball, golf, volleyball, student council, key club and
social media club, serving as class president all four years.

2024/2025 Recipients

Elijah Richard Marsh, 2024 graduate of English Valley High School in North English, IA, grandson of Ruth Henson and the late Richard Henson, is a recipient of the 2024/2025  27th Infantry Wolfhound Scholarship.  As class Valedictorian, Eli was chosen to represent his class in the KWWL Best of Class.  He will be attending Iowa State University in Ames this Fall to study Aerospace Engineering.

Noah Smith, 2023 graduate of Newtown High School, Newtown, CT, grandson of Ralph and Marjorie Smith, has received a 2024/25 27th Infantry Scholarship. Noah is currently completing his first year of college at Iowa State University in Ames pursuing a degree in Computer Science.

2023/2024 Recipients

Hannah Marsh

Hannah Marsh, 2021 graduate of English Valley Community Schools in North English, IA, received a 2023/24 27th Infantry Wolfhound Scholarship. She is the granddaughter of Ruth Henson and deceased Wolfhound Richard W Henson and is currently in her second year of pre-pharmacy college at Drake University, Des Moines, IA, with a concentration in Global and Comparative Public Health. She has been accepted into graduate school where she will continue her studies to earn her doctorate in pharmacy. A few of Hannah’s HS activities were playing flute in band, softball and volleyball. While in college she continues to enjoy Club Volleyball as well as being involved in Women in STEM, the pharmacy fraternity of Phi Delta Chi and Chemistry Club.

Lucas Benedict

Lucas E Benedict, 2023 graduate of Wayne Valley HS in Wayne, NJ, received a 2023/24 27th Infantry Wolfhound Scholarship.  Lucas is the grandson of Edward L Benedict and intends to pursue a degree in computer science having been accepted to several schools but not yet decided which one he’ll choose.  While in HS, he was a valued member of the Varsity Soccer team, NHS, Future Business Leaders of America and Wayne Valley’s Athletes for Action.  He also coached the local Boys and Girls Club basketball and soccer teams.

 

Nicolas Uram

Nicolas J Uram, 2022 graduate of Flat Rock Community HS, Flat Rock, MI, has received a 2023/24 27th Infantry Wolfhound Scholarship.  He is the grandson of William V Hartwick.  Nicholas is currently enrolled as a Freshman at the University of Michigan in Dearborn, in the field of Robotics Engineering.  While in HS, he was a member of NHS and was also enrolled in the Mechatronics Program.

 

2021/2022 Recipients

Olivia Heyne

Olivia Heyne, graduate of English Valley Community School in North English, Iowa, received the 2021/2022 27th Infantry Wolfhound Scholarship.  She is the granddaughter of deceased Wolfhound Richard W. Henson.  Olivia has toured with the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps out of Dubuque for the past two summers and is currently enrolled as a Freshman at the University of Missouri in the Biomedical Engineering program.  Being the lover of all things musical, she is also an accomplished pianist and plays trumpet for Marching Missou.
